George Floyd Square: Minneapolis vacates memorial, intersection reopens more than a year after Floyd’s death

The city intersection reopens a day after prosecutors ordered a judge to sentence Chauvin, who was convicted of murder and manslaughter, to 30 years in prison. Prior to Chauvin’s conviction later this month, prosecutors argued in a brief filed Wednesday that the judge’s decision that there were four aggravating factors in George Floyd’s murder was enough to justify the longer sentence. But Eric Nelson, Chauvin’s defense attorney, on Wednesday called for a reduction in the sentence and called for Chauvin to be given a suspended suspended sentence.
